Still Running Through Pain — or Stuck Not Running?

The Injury Keeps Coming Back

Runner's knee, IT band syndrome, shin splints — they flare up every training cycle because the root cause was never addressed.

Generic PT Isn't Working

Crowded clinics, 15-minute appointments, and one-size-fits-all exercise sheets aren't built for runners who want to perform — they're built for volume.

You're Losing More Than Miles

Every week off the road is a missed race, a lost training block, a goal slipping further out of reach. Pain isn't just physical — it's personal.

5-Star Running Physical Therapy in Medina, OH

 Catherine G.

Dr. Athena is so attentive and encouraging. I have been rehabbing my right knee since January, and I was able to run a half marathon this past weekend. She assesses your goals and helps make them attainable and reachable. She is so personable with patients and knowledgeable about her work that it rarely feels like a chore to attend appointments.

 Margaret M.

Dr. Athena is a straight up miracle worker! I went from not being able to get in or out of a car to driving, power walking and not walking down the stairs sideways. One forgets how amazing it is to experience daily life being pain free. So appreciate the time Dr. Athena spends individualizing a treatment plan. I feel confident and stronger than ever.

 Edith S.

Dr. Athena is, simply put, THE ABSOLUTE BEST. It is no surprise (nor coincidence) that she keeps winning the Medina County Gazette's Best of the Best award for her physical therapy. That she cares deeply about her clients is plainly evident in every session, and she has an intuitive sense about people's challenges and needs.

Athena Woolsteen, Bee Well Physical Therapy, Medina, Ohio (3)

Athena Woolsteen

PT, DPT, CIDN, FRCms

Physical therapy done the “right way” is personal for Dr. Athena. This dream all began after watching her own mother go through an ineffective, one-size-fits-all physical therapy program for a postoperative shoulder injury, where she ultimately did not feel valued or see any progress. Later that year, her mom sought treatment from a different therapist and thrived at a clinic that prioritized individualized, one-on-one, quality care. This drastic change in outcome was significant for both Dr. Athena and her mom. The dream to become a physical therapist was born, but more so a physical therapist who truly invests in her patients, dives into understanding their unique conditions, and helps them achieve their goals.

From then on, Dr. Athena directed her schooling and career path toward becoming that version of a physical therapist: completing Medina County Career Center’s Sports Medicine and Exercise Science program, her undergraduate studies in Pre-Physical Therapy and Exercise Science at Baldwin Wallace University, and finally her Doctorate of Physical Therapy at the University of Dayton. After completing her schooling, Dr. Athena was very passionate about bringing her dream of physical therapy done the “right way” back to her beloved hometown of Medina, Ohio. She aspires to give the Medina, Ohio community a reliable and trustworthy health and wellness resource for many years to come.

Dr. Athena specializes in manual therapy, dry needling, gait/running analysis, individualized exercise prescription, the McKenzie method for spinal conditions, and specialized vestibular treatment. In her free time, you can find Dr. Athena running, strength training, spending time with family, or training her German Shepherd, Stella.

Spencer Aukerman, PT, DPT

Spencer Aukerman

PT, DPT, CIDN

Spencer is a Doctor of Physical Therapy with a strong foundation in sports and orthopedic care, shaped by his own experience as a baseball player through high school and college. After recovering from several injuries with the help of physical therapy, he developed a deep appreciation for the human body and a desire to help others return to the activities they love. That passion ultimately led him to pursue his DPT at the University of Mount Union, following his undergraduate studies at Baldwin Wallace University.

With a special interest in working with rotational and overhead athletes — especially baseball players — Spencer brings both personal insight and advanced training to his work. He is certified in dry needling through IDN and enjoys treating shoulder, knee, and ankle injuries, often incorporating creative and individualized approaches to help clients perform at a higher level than before.

Spencer’s treatment philosophy centers on the belief that every person, and every body, is unique. Even when injuries look the same on paper, he knows each client’s goals, strengths, and needs are different. His sessions are rooted in listening first — understanding what matters most to the individual — and building a plan that reflects those goals with purpose and clarity.

A Medina native, Spencer is excited to serve the community he grew up in and grow his family here. Outside the clinic, he enjoys watching Cleveland sports (and catching a game in person when he can), golfing, and exploring new restaurants with his wife.

Diana Lugo

Client Experience Coordinator

Born in Tennessee and raised in Medina, Diana has always carried a strong love for movement and connection. In high school, she found her place on the softball field, and today she continues to prioritize her health by training with a personal trainer and keeping up with her lifting goals. She also enjoys long walks with her puppy, Danny, and can often be found tackling home projects with enthusiasm.

Diana’s journey with Bee Well began as a client. After experiencing sports injuries and seeking out physical therapy to target lingering issues, she discovered something different here: genuine one-on-one attention, thoughtful listening, and care that focused on her specific needs. That positive experience sparked her excitement to join the Bee Well team, where she now helps others feel supported in their own wellness journeys.

As our Client Experience Coordinator, Diana brings compassion, friendliness, and a great listening ear to every interaction. She’s passionate about ensuring each client’s experience is seamless and uplifting, from the very first call to every visit in the clinic.

Outside of work, Diana shares life with her mom, grandparents, and her two-year-old pup. A true Cleveland sports fan, she especially loves baseball and even travels with her mom to explore MLB ballparks across the country. She’s also a devoted reader who seeks out new bookstores wherever she goes. Fun fact: Diana is bilingual in Spanish and English and dreams of one day traveling to Italy.

 Common Questions

Everything you need to know before your first visit to Bee Well Physical Therapy in Medina, OH.

Do I need a referral or insurance to be seen at Bee Well?

No referral needed — Ohio is a direct-access state, which means you can schedule directly with us without seeing your doctor first. Bee Well operates as a cash-based, out-of-network practice. We do not bill insurance directly, but we provide detailed superbills that you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. We also accept HSA and FSA payments. For specific pricing details, we encourage you to book your free 15-minute discovery call — we'll walk you through everything transparently before you commit to anything.

How is Bee Well different from traditional physical therapy?

At Bee Well, every single visit is a full 60 minutes of one-on-one care with a Doctor of Physical Therapy — never an assistant, never split between multiple patients. Most traditional PT clinics see 3–5 patients per hour; we see one: you. You'll work with the same provider from your very first session to your last, so your plan is always built on a complete understanding of your history and goals. As the 2023 & 2024 Medina County Gazette 'Best of the Best' winner for physical therapy in Medina County, we've built our reputation on doing PT the right way.

What should I expect at my first visit for running physical therapy?

Your first session starts with a thorough conversation — we want to understand your injury history, your training, your goals, and what hasn't worked before. From there, your Doctor of Physical Therapy will conduct a comprehensive movement screen and, when appropriate, a high-speed running gait analysis to identify the biomechanical patterns contributing to your pain. You'll leave your first visit with a clear diagnosis, a personalized plan of care, and the confidence of knowing exactly what we're going to do together to get you back on the road.
