# Do I Need to Stop Running If My Knee Hurts? 🏃

You’re a few miles into your run when you start to notice it: **knee pain.**

Maybe it’s a dull ache that shows up toward the end of your run. Maybe it’s been lingering for a few weeks. Or maybe you’ve started noticing it during everyday activities like going up and down stairs.

For many runners, the first thought is:

**“Do I need to stop running?”**

The answer isn’t always yes.

At [Bee Well Physical Therapy](https://www.beewellphysicaltherapy.com/general-physical-therapy-medina-oh), we believe pain doesn’t automatically mean you need to stop doing the activities you enjoy. Instead, knee pain while running can be a sign that it’s time to take a closer look at what may be contributing to it.

## Why Does My Knee Hurt When I Run?

There isn’t one single cause of knee pain in runners.

Sometimes discomfort develops after increasing mileage or intensity too quickly. Other times, changes in strength, mobility, running mechanics, recovery, or training habits may be contributing.

Common factors can include:

- A recent increase in running mileage
- Adding more hills, speed work, or harder workouts
- Changes in running frequency
- Strength or mobility limitations
- Inadequate recovery between runs
- Changes in footwear or running surfaces
- Running mechanics

This is also why simply identifying discomfort as “runner’s knee” doesn’t always tell the whole story. Two runners can experience pain in a similar area for very different reasons.

Understanding **why your knee is hurting** is an important part of figuring out what to do next.

## Does Knee Pain Mean I Have to Stop Running?

Not necessarily.

Complete rest may sometimes be appropriate, especially depending on the type and severity of an injury. But for many running-related issues, stopping all activity isn’t automatically the only option.

Instead, you may be able to temporarily adjust your training while addressing the factors contributing to your symptoms.

That could mean changing your mileage, slowing down your pace, taking an extra recovery day, adjusting your workouts, or temporarily reducing activities that are particularly aggravating.

The goal isn’t simply to push through pain, but it also isn’t always to stop moving altogether.

The goal is to find the **right amount of activity for where you are right now.**

## Pay Attention to What Your Knee Is Telling You

Not all knee discomfort looks the same.

If you notice a mild ache that stays relatively consistent and settles shortly after your run, that may require a different approach than pain that becomes progressively worse as you continue running.

It’s worth paying closer attention if:

- Your pain is becoming more frequent or intense
- You’re changing the way you run because of the pain
- Your knee is swollen
- Pain continues well after your run
- Everyday activities are becoming uncomfortable
- Your running performance is being affected
- The problem keeps returning despite taking time off

If something doesn’t feel right, getting it assessed sooner can help you better understand what’s going on rather than repeatedly cycling between running, pain, and rest.

## Strength Training Can Be Part of the Solution

Running requires more than cardiovascular endurance.

Your body has to repeatedly absorb and produce force with every stride. Having adequate strength throughout the hips, legs, calves, and surrounding musculature can help your body manage those demands.

A strengthening program for a runner with knee pain may include exercises targeting the:

- Quadriceps
- Glutes and hips
- Hamstrings
- Calves
- Trunk and core

But there isn’t one universal list of “best exercises for runner’s knee.”

The right exercises depend on the individual runner, their symptoms, their training demands, and what an assessment shows.

## Your Training Habits Matter Too

Sometimes the issue isn’t simply about strength or mobility.

Your overall training load matters.

Maybe you recently jumped from running two days per week to five. Maybe you started training for a race and increased your mileage quickly. Or perhaps you added hills and speed work at the same time.

Your body needs time to adapt to increased demands.

That doesn’t mean you should be afraid to challenge yourself. Increasing mileage, running faster, and tackling longer distances are all normal parts of training.

The key is giving your body enough opportunity to adapt along the way.

## Physical Therapy for Runners in Medina, Ohio

If knee pain is keeping you from enjoying your runs, a physical therapy evaluation can help determine what may be contributing to your symptoms.

At [**Bee Well Physical Therapy in Medina, Ohio**,](https://www.beewellphysicaltherapy.com/general-physical-therapy-medina-oh) we take a one-on-one approach to care. Rather than focusing only on where you hurt, we look at the bigger picture, including your movement, strength, mobility, training habits, and individual goals.

For runners, that may also mean looking at how your body handles the specific demands of running.

From there, we can develop an individualized plan designed to help you manage your current symptoms while working toward getting back to the mileage, pace, races, or activities that matter to you.

## Keep Running in Perspective

If your knee starts hurting, don’t automatically assume your running days are over.

Sometimes your body simply needs a change in training, more recovery, additional strength, or some guidance to address what’s contributing to the problem.

You don’t always have to choose between **running through pain** and **stopping completely.**

There may be a middle ground that allows you to keep moving while working toward feeling and running better.

If knee pain has been getting in the way of your runs, the team at [**Bee Well Physical Therapy**](https://www.beewellphysicaltherapy.com/running-physical-therapy-medina-oh) is here to help you better understand what’s going on and determine your next step. 🐝💛
